JUST RUN is a school-based youth running program that helps promote fitness and healthy lifestyle choices while combating childhood obesity and its related illnesses. Throughout the course of the 6-8 week program, the students train to run a 5K race which then culminates in the JUST RUN Lake County 5K in Fairport Harbor, Ohio. This year, the race will take place on Saturday, May 26th.
For most students involved in JUST RUN, it is their first time running a 5K whereas some previous participants cannot wait for spring each year to start training again. All of the preparation and training is done at the schools including recruiting students, scheduling and planning practices, training before or after school, etc. The adults who run the program for each school do so strictly on a volunteer basis. Typically these volunteers are a physical education teacher, coach of another sport or parent who spearheads the program.
If you have a student interested in participating, contact your local school for more information about how to get your student involved!
We are seeking sponsors for our 2018 event in order to help offset the costs for t-shirts, awards, supplies, snacks, water and other materials needed to run a successful program. When the program first started in 2010, JUST RUN enrolled 60 students in the program. In 2017, JUST RUN enrolled over 1,500 students. If you or someone you know is interested in sponsoring JUST RUN, please contact Kathy Milo, M.Ed., the Director of Health Promotion and Planning at 440-350-2447 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
