Support from Senator Turner’s office helped a consortium of five Lake County communities and four county agencies receive a $75,000 planning grant from NOACA – the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency.
NOACA distributes government funds through programs such as the Transportation for Livable Communities Initiative (TLCI), which helps communities develop alternative modes of transportation such as transit, recreational trails, and better pedestrian connections.
The $75,000 TLCI grant award will be used by the Lake County group to develop a recreational trailway network to connect Headlands Beach State Park with other nearby points of interest. Headlands State Park is located 15 miles east of the City of Cleveland, and is the largest free access beach on Ohio’s Lake Erie shoreline. It receives an average of more than 2 million visits annually.
Deputy Health Commissioner Ron H. Graham had this to say about the recent grant award. “The Central Lake County region has numerous recreation and natural areas, entertainment and dining venues, businesses, and neighborhoods that provide a unique character and a rich quality. By connecting them through a cohesive alternative transportation network of pedestrian, bicycle and water trails it would enhance the regions identity as a place to live, work, visit, and play. It is wonderful to have to opportunity to work with five Lake County communities (Mentor, Painesville, Fairport Harbor, Grand River Village, and Painesville Township) and four agencies (Lake County General Health District, Laketran, Lake County Planning Commission and Lake Metroparks) to develop a shared a common vision of enhancing the transportation/recreation network within central Lake County. The residents of Lake County will also be given ample opportunity to comment and drive the process.”
