BIKE HELMET PROGRAM RETURNS TO
THE LAKE COUNTY GENERAL HEALTH DISTRICT
The Lake County General Health District is happy to announce that bike helmets are now available to income-eligible families for the cost of $5.00 each. Helmets are available in toddler, child, youth and adult sizes and meet or exceed U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Standards. “Biking is a great summer activity, whether you’re biking for fun, exercise or as form of transportation. Unfortunately, accidents can happen and wearing a bike helmet reduces the risk of serious injury,” according to Christine Margalis, Health Educator with the Lake County General Health District.
Bike helmets must fit properly to be effective and the recipient’s head must be measured for proper sizing. Additional padding is included with the helmet to insure proper fit. Never purchase a helmet that someone will “grow into.” Helmets need to fit properly when you get them. Helmets cannot be guaranteed to be effective after a crash, no matter how expensive the helmet was or when it was purchased. When in doubt, it always best to replace the helmet.
Bike helmets are available on a walk-in basis at the Lake County General Health District during business hours. Please make sure all members of the family who would like helmets are present. For additional questions about program eligibility, please contact Christine Margalis at 440.350.2879.
