
Class Description: This fall prevention program is conducted in 8 two-hour classes and uses group discussion, problem solving strategies, videos, and gentle exercise. Participants learn positive coping methods to reduce fear of falling and remain active and independent.
Class Participants: Adults aged 50 or older who have a concern or fear of falling.
Class Outcomes: Participants report that they have increased the amount they exercise on a regular basis as a result of this program. They learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals for increasing activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and promote exercise to increase strength and balance.
Class Instructors: Instructors are known as A Matter of Balance Coaches. Each class is taught by two trained A Matter of Balance Coaches who utilize A Matter of Balance Coach Handbook as the main teaching tool.
Class Length and Set Up: Each class is two hours in length. A total of eight classes are taught over four weeks and are held twice per week, normally during weekdays. Occasionally, classes may be taught over eight weeks and are held once per week. The class schedule will depend on the hosting site and the availability of the coaches assigned to instruct the classes.
Class Locations: Classes are held at participating senior centers and assisted living facilities in Lake County.

Coach Information: Coaches need good communication and interpersonal skills, enthusiasm, dependability, willingness to lead small groups of older adults, and ability to lead low to moderate level exercise. Coaches will need to commit to instructing one 8 session class the year they become trained.
